HOW TO BE ”BEYOND THE BEST”…. TRAINERS, COACHES, GYMS, HEALTH CLUBS….
Over fifty years ago, there were some select individuals who knew that health clubs and gyms were not delivering anything, especially in way of measured, predictable, constant results!
The gyms, and clubs were open, stacked with equipment, nice shower rooms, but the main attraction was seriously missing, that was results!
When most individuals decide to go to a health club or gym, it is for one main purpose, “physical change!”
Sadly, even way back then, most participants, and members, were at best only “partially informed!” By partially, I mean that few, very few actually had a plan that contained any real depth of physiological facts, and applications!
Sure, there were the select few examples of super muscular physiques! But the actual chances of that individual actually, truly knowing exactly how things factually worked was slim, very slim at best! Now that does not mean that those individuals would not expound on how they believed they got those muscles! Oh, no, quite the contrary, they all loved to state how “they thought” they had their success!
Then there are always those few, the ones who think everything through, think with a burning desire to “actually know the specific facts,” and the applications! These are the ones, who desired not just to be an extreme example, but also to be an instructor, a coach, or even a club owner!
Now if a person were to be a club owner or coach, one would hopefully desire to get all or as many as possible members serious visible results! After all, if the majority of your members were walking examples, billboards if you will, the others would be fighting to get in the door!
Fitness, and the gyms hit it big in the mid 1980’s! That when the National Trade and Fitness Magazine put out the first time “description” of “Personal Trainers!” A friend and I of mine were mentioned in that article! This was the beginning of the “PERSONAL TRAINER” craze!
Then there were the way serious, driven types, who do not just want to succeed, but desire to be the absolute, without a doubt the very, very best! Now when it comes to these serious types, that was me! My friends would say, when too much is still not enough, well, then there is “BERT!”
Now understand that way back 40+ years ago “health” was always a concern! However, when the word “fitness” came into view, things changed! You see people take everything to extremes, as it is with muscle and bodybuilding! However, with new ideas, and new opportunities comes people who are in a rush, a rush to get the money, without having all the answers! This is when I was asked by my clients to “write a book,” especially for those who didn’t live within a reasonable distance to get to Tucson or San Diego may utilize and learn my programs services! So, I wrote a book to give people a chance to know what worked and what was fraud! My book, The Great Fitness Fraud, was written and is now on Amazon!
I was also fortunate enough to see and understand, that weight training or resistance training, was a stressing of tissue, to cause the body to respond by “healing stressed tissues” or by adding more muscle! So, most, even today do not see resistance training as a “stimulus” (stressor) to cause a “hopeful” positive response of “added strength or muscle” for better or increased performance!
The other “avoided” but much needed understanding was that it is not just “resistance training,” but is correctly called, “progressive resistance training!” There is to be “serious consideration in making the training “progressive” in all ways!
Recovery from the stress of exercise was tossed to the side, and everyone went directly to believing “more” training meant more muscle! So “ego” or the desire for “MORE,” took over, and people stopped considering “recovery,” just train more and more and more!
So, just concentrating on training can run for a short bit, but then the body starts to “slow the results!” The body has definite requirements for adequate response, and I saw that “recovery” was the most important factor for quicker, better, and fuller responses!
“Time or rest” to allow for “accumulation and processing of materials” was avoided!
So, to gain more positive results, “more time or rest” was required for the repair of the stressed tissues!
Learning maximum or full “recovery” is where I have spent the last 50+ years, in seeking every possible way to improve responses! I have sought ways to make responses faster, greater!
Never have I ever seen anyone, who did not want faster or more results! I knew from every point, being performance, strength, speed, business and health that better, more and faster was the goal!
Now understand that my intent was this, “health,” had to be at the center, plus a constant factor! After all, being strong, performing better is great, yet without health, everything would be of short duration, even life! Imagine you help an athlete to excel, shouldn’t that athlete desire to have as long a career as possible?
I started to see “everyone,” yes, everyone as an athlete! Why not, human performance is no different, “whether helping a sick person to get well,” or seeing an athlete excel, it is all “human performance!” Realize, healing stressed tissues from resistance training, or stressed internal systems to respond for healing in general, it’s basically all the same systems, and they cannot be totally separated!
Now, I was truly on my way to a “totally driven” path, to help humanity! Physical performance in any, and every dimension!
So, since starting I have been able to share gathered information with many, many, individuals, in varied fields! This has given me tremendous insights to develop many successful programs that are predictable, repeatable, and sustainable, with unequaled, tested, measured, proven results! I have been saddened by the serious lack of general ability, professionalism, and “care” that has existed in the areas of gyms, health clubs, trainers, coaches, instructors, and of course as always Medicine in general! Most Doctors “cannot even start to guarantee” things like producing only fat loss, without muscle loss, muscle gain without fat gain, predict heart rate changes, predict sleep pattern changes, and this list just gets longer!
Today, people are supposed to believe the medical field should be trusted to help us to gain health. Who would be stupid enough to do this? Unfortunately, the masses do!
